Copy Editor/Writer
The Education Trust seeks a Copy Editor/Writer to join the organization’s Division of Government Affairs and Communications. Founded in 1992, The Education Trust works for the high academic achievement of all students, pre-kindergarten through college, with the goal of closing the gaps in opportunity and achievement that separate low-income students and students of color from other youth.
The Copy Editor/Writer sharpens and perfects publications that support the organization’s policy, practice, and advocacy work. Reporting to the Director of Publications, the Copy Editor/Writer’s primary function is to help us convey our message in a clear and compelling fashion and ensure that our publications are timely, well written, and error free. Major Responsibilities
The Copy Editor/Writer’s primary responsibility is working with authors, the Director of Publications, and the Graphic Designer to ensure the clarity and accuracy of The Education Trust’s editorial products. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
· Proofreading and fact-checking a wide array of written materials.
· Editing reports and other materials, as assigned.
· Contributing to and editing text for The Education Trust Web site and e-newsletters.
· Responding to requests to reprint Education Trust materials.
· Drafting other written materials as needed.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
· Excellent writing and editing skills and a superior command of grammar and punctuation.
· Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment across several functional areas.
· Dedication to maintaining the organization’s editorial standards in all work.
· Ability to juggle multiple assignments and complete work accurately and on deadline.
· Exceptionally keen eye for proofreading.
· Experience translating research-based prose into accessible, popular-style prose.
· Working knowledge of professional style manuals used in journalism and academia, such as the Associated Press Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style.
· Background in journalism, with a particular focus on education.
· Desire to work in an engaging, mission-driven environment.
· Bachelor’s degree required.
