Hot off the page and onto the stage...Catch the Buzz.
Based entirely on interviews with students, teachers, and school leaders, this new one-woman show weaves a tale of success chronicling the educational struggles and ultimate triumphs of schools, educators, and students who refuse to settle for anything short of real success.
Among the characters you'll meet:
Ø Richard, a passionate Mexican-American principal who, just seven years ago, entered a struggling rural high school plagued by gangs and abysmal achievement levels. Determined to change the life prospects for his students, many the children of poor, migrant farm workers, Richard worked tirelessly to change policies and practices and the beliefs underlying them to create a culture of high achievement and hope among staff and students. The hard work is paying off and producing solid academic gains every year. His motto and message to his students, proudly displayed everywhere, from the school’s hallways to his own license plate, is “Si, se puede” – Yes, it can be done.
Ø Wendy, a New York teacher who began her career in a struggling urban school with few supports for new teachers. She transferred to a high school that, while confronted with the same high levels of poverty, grows teachers into masters of their crafts and powerful change agents in the lives of their students.
Ø Maxx, a Puerto Rican high school senior who transferred to his high school from the Bronx and transformed his life. Lost in a broken system, Maxx had responded like so many students do, by giving up. But, driven by the high standards of his new school and a desire to help his family, Maxx changes his life’s course and heads straight for college.
