Highlight on High Schools
American high schools are in trouble:
n Achievement at the secondary level is stagnant;
n Our academic standing is on the decline among other industrialized countries; and
n Too many students leave our high schools unprepared for the challenges of college and work.
Those are the students who make it to graduation. Thirty percent or more drop out. The numbers are even worse for students of color – nearly half do not graduate on time.
Change is needed -- now. The Education Trust has created an array of reports and presentations to help policymakers, parents, practitioners, and the public better understand achievement and attainment trends in high school and the potential of higher-performing secondary schools to transform students’ lives.
