On July 2, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the landmark Civil Rights Act, moving us one step closer to fulfilling the American promise that we commemorate this week. On this Independence Day, with our first African-American president, there’s good reason to celebrate the hard-won, breathtaking progress our nation has made.
Even as we celebrate, we cannot for a moment forget the work yet to be done.
Too many children – particularly our low-income children and children of color – attend schools that are still unworthy of their dreams and unworthy of our national values.
We must ensure that EVERY American child gets the education he or she needs to contribute to and benefit from the mainstream of our civic, cultural, and economic life. It’s up to all of us to live up to the promise – for our children and our great nation.
